Terrace Gardening

Terrace garden layout ideas

Grow more on your terrace.

The first step in any terrace layout is understanding the structural load capacity. Most residential terraces are rated between 150 and 300 kg per square metre, including people and furniture. Cluster the heaviest containers over load-bearing walls and beams, typically around the perimeter, and keep the centre of the terrace lighter.

Beyond weight, think in zones. A cooking zone near the kitchen door with herbs in small containers, a productive zone of larger vegetable planters in the best sun, a social zone with furniture that moves seasonally, and a screening zone along exposed edges. Even a small terrace of 15 square metres benefits from this kind of intentional zoning because it separates functions and makes the space feel larger.

Vertical space is underused on most terraces. Wall planters, tiered shelving, and trellises with climbers multiply the planting area without adding floor load. Raised beds on legs spread weight over a larger footprint than a single heavy pot in the same position, and put soil at a comfortable working height.
